Surface from Shape File

When I try to create a surface in civil 3d 2012 using the surface from GIS data option, I fill everything in, then click on finish and I get a error, No GIS Data to import.

If I use the same file and do a map import it works. Am I missing something?

you may have already found a solution to your question, but this blog post from Civil 3D Reminders helped me create a Civil 3d surface from shape files.

Only that the help file is incomplete on the exact procedure one must use to LOGIN to the data store to actually finish the rest of the steps required.

I thought I'd place the answer here to save folks from chasing links.
