Default Non-annotative text (Arial Narrow Mtext/Dtext) is not visible

I am having a strange issue with non-annotative Arial Narrow Mtext and Dtext not showing up in ACAD 2012 for specific files. The strange thing is that when file is opened on a different machine in the office (running XP), the text is visible, so it seems to be some local setting/issue. This has also allowed me to troubleshoot it a bit:
    - The file happens to be an Xref (our standard title block), but the text is not visible whether you have the Xref open or you have the drawing that it is Xref'd into open
    - When you have the text editor open, the preview is blank (perhaps the text file is corrupted?)
    - In the titleblock Xref, other non-annotative font types are visible (such as Arial)
    - Annotation visibility does not affect things (because this is non-annotative text)
    - The problem is solved by changing the text type or turning annotative properties on, however because this issue seems to be happening for all of our titleblock Xrefs for all of our existing jobs, we would prefer to figure out what the problem is with that one particular machine (which is running windows 7)!

Arial Narrow is not supplied as part of Windows 7 (or Vista or XP). It IS supplied with MS Office.
Get it, install it to \Windows\Fonts.

Ya, that is true, but Arial Narrow was already installed on the Win7 machine through the office installation (it is a font available when you open word). In ACAD, if text that uses the Arial Narrow font type is changed from annotative from non-annotative, the text is visible on the Win 7 machine! This is a visibility problem with non-annotative Arial Narrow (or so it seems) ...

    Oh.
    It seemed too simple.
