Is it possible to suppress the dwg from making a data connection when you open the dwg? I have a file that is hanging and won't finish loading. I'm thinking that if I can suppress the connection, I can modify it to fix the problem.

Ed, I'm unsure if this thread will be of help to you or not... I was thinking that while the data connection you have may not be layer related, that perhaps some sort of similar concept may be applicable.
Good luck!

Cut and paste the data from its location to your desktop. open dwg, sort it out, then cut and paste data back to its proper place.
Open it with TruView, save as new dwg, then try opening in Map3D.
What type of data connection is it? MySQL, shp, ODBC ?
