I would suggest you do this in a working file, as what you are attempting to do is not the purpose or function of the Sub-Assembly composer as I undertand it.

Go to the insert ribbon tab, on the import panel expand the drop down on the bottom and select import sub-assemblies. Browse to the file location and select it.

The question is referring to how one can insert pre-made subassemblies from Civil 3D in order to EDIT the existing subassemblies. This would also help with actually understanding how new custom subassemblies need to be laid out. Is there a way to IMPORT an existing Civil 3D subassembly into the Subassembly Composer. If it wasn't intended for the Composer to be an Editor, I'm pretty sure this needs to be accomodated for at some point. Section 3D is far superior as far as I can tell. Maybe Civil 3D needs to cough up some dough and buy Section 3D? (No i'm not a Section 3D salesman, I just seen it in action in a very complex context.)
