Default Space Tags were working... now they aren't!

    Hi everyone,

I'm a bit baffled here, and I'm hoping that someone can clue me in to what obvious thing I'm overlooking. I have a project in which I've set up spaces and space tags with no problem. I'm using a Space Tag family that's getting the Room Name and Room Number parameters from the linked model, and that was working, up until now. Now, all of my space tags are reading Room: Unoccupied, Number: Unoccupied.

I've gone into the linked architectural model, and their "rooms" exist, and have names and numbers applied to them, so nothing seems to have changed there. I'm at a loss... Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Rob

I have found in the past that if the bottom of the SPACE is not exactly at the bottom of the ROOM, then the "unoccupied" will show up. Could the Arch's levels have moved?

Do you have two linked arch or structural models linked into the project? I have had this exact problem numerous times.

One cause (but not the only cause apparently) is that two floors are linked in on top of each other. Meaning you link in your arch model with floor elements and then link in the structural model with floor elements. The two floors **** Revit off and creates behavior such as this.

This has been one cause for the unoccupied problem. It has happened other times for us as well and we have yet to figure it out for those instances.

It's my observation that the multiple floors issues isn't just that there ARE multiple floors, it's that usually there are floors that are "inside" the Space. When an architect places "finish" floors on top the structural slab (often in a separate model) they typically place the floor using an offset equal to the material thickness. This puts the floor up/inside the Space. That's what seems to reduce the space to a quivering mess.

One thing that fixes it, adjust your level(s) computation height so it is equal to the top or slightly above their finish floors. Then again you can ask them to set the finish floors to not be Room Bounding (they just un-check the property shown in the attached image).

Then again, another way is to just use the regular space tag (using space name/number) and the Space Naming Utility extension (free to subscription members) to sync Room names/numbers with Space names/numbers.

Can you re-associate spaces to rooms after removing the link and re-linking the model? Had an issue where I needed to remove the linked arch model and re-establish the link (don't ask)...after doing so, all my spaces/space tags report "unoccupied". Looking for the best way to get these back and playing nice with the arch model, thanks!

Another cause of this issue, is if the Architects have added more phases to their model. I just dealt with this recently, where a "future" phase was added, and my "New Construction" phase in the electrical model was automatically mapped to this new future phase that had no rooms in it. Thus, all of the space tags started saying "Unoccupied". This was easily fixed by selecting the architectural link, and editing it's type properties, and adjusting the phase mapping so the new construction phases were aligned.
