I have a .dwg pipe network file that was created with Civil 3D 2012. I am trying to open it in Civil 3D 2011 but I am getting only the place holder boxes that happen when an Object Enabler is not installed.
Are 2011 models unworkable with 2012?

Backwards compatibility is not possible with some features in Civil3D, once you start a design in 2012 it needs to stay in 2012 as a rule of thumb.
Actually, backwards-compatibility is pretty much impossible with everything. You can manage a bit with LandXML import/export, but that leaves a lot to be desired.
Even forward-compatibility is a problem... You can open C3D 2011 drawings in C3D 2012, and you may find many things broken. It's even worse if you try opening a C3D 2010 (or earlier) drawing in C3D 2011 or 2012. As a general rule, there is no compatibility between ANY release of C3D.
This is really problematic if you're on subscription, because according to Autodesk's licensing terms, you are REQUIRED to switch to the latest release within 90 days, and completely stop using any previous release. That means every subscription customer who didn't switch to C3D 2012 as of last July is in violation of their subscription agreement.
If you think that's absolute BS and an affront to every C3D customer, I agree. And if you agree, PLEASE tell Autodesk that this BS has to stop. They only listen when enough people complain.
