Default Lost DWG icon association in 2012

    Hello!

Running Windows 7 with AutoCAD 2012, I seem to have lost my DWG icon assoiciated with my drawing files. I have the "red A" icon and I really liked the yellow and blue DWG icon. I can see it in the Acad.exe file, and I had it on my XP system, but it's lost in the Windows 7 version. Apparently, there is no way to assign different icons to files in windows 7 (at least I can't change the AutoCAD one.) I have done the file association route and an given the choice to start Acad with the .exe or the launcher. If I chose the launcher, I get to see a real ugly icon throughout my system. If I choose the .exe, I only get to see the red A.

Please tell me there is a way to get back to seeing my perdy DWG icon?

If you want to see what I mean, any quick google image search for DWG icon will bring it up.

You folks are my last hope.

    Thank you very much!

    Michael

I'm not understanding what you mean, are you referring to the attached screen shot?
if so, is the dwg file type set to be opened using the AutoCAD dwg launcher or something else?

A screenshot would help. But if I am understanding you correctly, this error is a function of windows, not AutoCAD. It can most likely be solved by:

    Right-clicking on a .dwg file
    Selecting "open with->Choose Program"
Then browse to the root directory of AutoCAD 2012 and select acad.exe
    [C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012\acad.exe]

There is a check box that says something to the effect of "always use the selected program to open this kind of file". Be sure this box is checked.

As I have XP at work, I am kinda doing this from memory. So some of the words or boxes may vary. But I believe this is the general solution to the problem.

In XP, it was easy. Win7, not so much.

Thank you so much for this link. The Default Programs Editor is just what I needed. The AutoCAD 2012 icons do not have enough contrast on my system, the old blue & yellow icon is much more visible. I was so impressed I want to donate to the developer, but I HATE PayPal.

And I really like the quotes in your sig block. Can I steal them to post to FB?

Glad you like them,. They are both original, at least I've never seen either one elsewhere -- but feel free to repost, and you can even feel free to give my handle credit

I saw this in the link that was attached above and this is an easy way to fix this problem and it worked for me instantly. No need to download anything.

"It seems that Win7 occasionally overrides your setting. If so, find your “abcfile” (key) in HKEY_CURRENT_USER and delete the Win7 created UserChoice key (The Notepad icon grabbed one of my special textfile types with my own icon)"
