Editing a roof with void form or cut geometry?

this problem has been driving me crazy because it seems it should be easy..

I am trying to edit a roof created by using the "create by footprint" option. I want to use an extrusion of some sort to modify the rafter tails. I've tried using a modeled in place void form component and I've also tried using a modeled in place mass and using their cut geometry tool. I can seem to get either to cut the geometry.

If it helps I want to be able to use an extrusion lengthwise along the building to shape the rafter tails. I would also like to be able to cut the material between rafters out to create an illusion of rafters.

Model the rafters as individual rafters, not as a roof. By rafters, I'm assuming you mean beams. You can shape the ends of beams using a cutout using the Opening tool on the Structure tab. I generally model the roofing material (membrane, shingles, whatever) as a separate object, and model the structure as a separate object or collection of objects.

If the rafter tails are a component family, an in-place void will not cut it. In-place voids only cut system families. How are you modeling your rafter tails?

I use a line based generic family with parametes to change the spacing, length, pitch, & plumb cut/square cut. I've also included a void that cuts out the roof between the rafters as well as a void that can clip the tip of the rafters which is not showing. Since you can not turn a void on or off in a family, the latter void has to be moved into and out of place depending if I want them clipped.
