Default Dimension Continuation - Can't Input Next Dimension

Hi all - first, thanks for all the helpful advice...so much knowledge around these parts!

I have a seemingly strange problem with linear dimension lines.....
If I draw a dimension line from an origin, I can click the basepoint, input a dimension I want, and the DIM line extends to the input value (and displays the correct dimension).
If I try to draw another dimension line by Continuing the first, it seems to give a random length, regardless of the next input.

    So the sequence would be:
    1) DIM, click basepoint, drag cursor the appropriate direction
    2) Input value I want it to be (eg, 24", or whatever)
    3) Get correct value displayed.
    4) DIM, C, click dimension line to continue as basepoint
    5) drag cursor appropriate direction, input value
    6) get seemingly random distance displayed.

Has anyone else ran into this? Or is there something weird with how AutoCAD establishes the length values?

    Thanks in advance!

Well I don't use dim-continue that often and when I do, I'm dimensioning something (snapping to lines etc).
I tried your sequence, and yes, if you type a value while in the continue mode, you don't get what you typed, you get something less.

I'm not sure your supposed to use it that way, you're supposed to be measuring an object.

I don't know the answer, but I feel that is not meant to work like that (like you're drawing a line and inputting lengths etc).

    Thanks for the reply!
Yeah, I know it's not really the "proper" way to use it, but had some architectural markups that seemed like it would have made it pretty easy (if it had worked)!
But if it's happening to you too, I guess that's just how it works.
