    Default image insertion

Can I insert and bind an image file (jpg) the same way I insert and XBIND a reference file? I want to permanently make it a part of the file so the image doesn't have to be saved. Can it be done in paperspace to minimize the number of viewports?

So far as I am aware, no.
This is a screencap from AutoCAD MEP 2013, and the options are still slightly different between dwg references and image files. ScreenShot559.jpg

Thanks for the reply. It seems crazy this hasn't been improved on yet. I'm pretty sure MicroStation can. I'll do it in MicroStation and convert the file to AutoCAD. Hard to believe but I thought for sure I've seen it done. Thanks again. Al

I'm not sue MicroStation can do it either... I may be wrong.
I've worked in MS recently and wanted to do just that, and there was no "bind" option for raster images.
I still needed to send the image along with the file with a relative path.

But like I said, I could be wrong.
And even if you could, I don't think it would convert to AutoCAD with it bound.

Let us know how you make out with this.

I'm running a little behind on updates, but etransmit will pack images with the drawing for sending in e-mail. I think it saves as a zip file. I haven't used it in a long time. Otherwise, it remains as a separate file.

Give people a job worth doing, the tools to do it, recognition of a job well done & get out of the way.

is it technically bound when the image is inserted as an OLE object?

Ole is included as a binary object in the file, so that's one option the OP can try. If may not be technically bound, but it is buried inside the dwg file and not separate. IF -- and IMHO it's a deal stopper, the loss of image quality and limitations on OLE plotting are acceptable. Neither is considered good enough here, so OLE is relegated to a very poor third best.

Thanks for all the response. What I am dealing with is an archaic drawing storage facility that only recently updated their CAD base to AutoCAD 2010 from 2008. The saved drawings need to be bound and the viewports limited to one. These drawings are then saved as DWF files which are used for plotting and reviewing system wide. Images are seen as an unnecessary nuisance.

So...How is an non-BMP image file bound to a dwg? OLE does BMP's but BMP's are large; PDF's and JPG's small, how do I bind one of these? Trying to reduce dwg file size and video memory usage.

Could they not use PDF instead?
