Default Panels missing or mixed up in Ribbon Tabs

I have a client whose ribbons are behaving erratically - e.g. after placing a diffuser, selecting said diffuser will not produce the "Create Systems" panel on the contextual tab. After re-booting Revit, the panel in question appeared not only when he selected the diffuser, but as a permanent part of the standard Modify tab (i.e., nothing selected at all). Also, when placing a hosted family, he had no placement options (I personally verified that he had selected the correct family). After cancelling out of that operation, he tried placing the same exact family; this time, the placement options appeared. Anybody else having problems with this type of behavior?

We just had this problem show up on a few users' machines, and our brilliant IT guy found a solution. I know it involves rolling back the .net version, but I'm not sure what the specifics were. He's doing a write-up of the procedure today, I'll post it once he's done.
