    Default Large File Maintenance

    Greetings,

I am a recent hire at an architecture firm and have been asigned to investigate an issue with large cad files. The issue is a dwg was created and usually the file size is less then 1mb, however their is something inside one of the existing dwgs that is causing the size to be around 7-9mb. I have tried to run an audit and purge all, including nested blocks, wblock the entire drawing, however the file only seems to shrink about .5mb. Also if anything is copied from this dwg, (and I mean anything a dimension, a line, anything) and pasted into a new dwg the information hidden within it also moves and the new dwg file size begins at over 7mb. Please help.

Thank you very much for any assistance.

    -Mark K.

Have you checked for external references (XREF), layer states (LAYERSTATE) and wipeouts (WIPEOUT)?

If I XREF the file the size remains extremely small about 400kb. Its only if I copy and paste something that is not an xref into a new dwg then the file grows to about 8mb.

Regapps, scalelists, layerfilters, aec object data, dgnlinestyle cruft, custom dictionaries lots of possibilities. What version of Acad (and/or vertical) are you running?

Create a new empty drawing, cut and paste a single line from the 'bad' drawing into the new one. do a LIST ALL and see what the result is.

    Anything else show up?

Erase the lie, purge all. then do a -PURGE R and see how many hundreds/thousands iof RegApps are there.

That would be my guess if I had to bet on it.

As cadtag said, start a new empty (no template) drawing, then paste in a line from the "bloated" drawing.
Save this now bloated drawing and upload to dropbox or something and send me the link.

we are currently going through this right now.
    Open the file and DXFOUT.
The DXF file will be about 100meg.

Open the DXF, purge, audit etc.

    Save it back to ACAD.

Do the above again, DXFOUT etc and once saved back to acad it should be 400k or so.

I did 17 drawings totalling 147 meg and I got it down to 6meg total.

    Hope this helps!

    PURGE
    -PURGE (for regapps)
    AUDIT

These commands are my favorites to keep drawings clean.
