    Question Geotechnical/Subterranean Visualization?

Does anyone have any experience/ideas/examples of underground visualization? I've been working with a geotech firm for a few months now and I just can't get the renders to a point I'm satisfied with. Portraying underground entities while maintaining the visible above-ground entities is difficult to say the least. Any direction on this? Maybe some examples of what others have done to spark some ideas?

Hi STusic, hope you're having a great weekend

What is your client asking for? Still image, video, underground surface layers, utilities, what?

Cross sections are often the best for geotech visualizaton (slicing your scene in half, etc). There are tons of example online.

If you're looking for still shot with xray-like surface I'd suggest using post-production techniques. Render your surface, then render each layer and change the transparency and various settings using photoshop; it's perfect for stuff like this. You'll have to tweak the blending so you get the right results, but seems likes an easier approach then using max by itself.

Of course, I'm making a bunch of assumptions. If you offer more information I'd be happy to do what I can to help you.
