## Trying to constrain a box to 45 degees and a distance from ...

I am trying to place a box onto another box at an angler of 45 degrees. I then want to have the turned box a distance from the top edge and side edge.

When i use the angle constraint I can't use any other to constrain to the edges.

I have included a simple picture to help describe it. I would like to use the same techniques, linear, used to place holes.

You can make (negative) Mates.
- Select Surface of junk1
- Select Point (or Edge) of junk 2
- give a distance from surface to point (ie. -10)
- repeat the prosedure with other set of surface/point

You can also make work surfaces to either junk1 or junk 2 to connect together or you can use origin planes.

OK. We tried the first suggestion but thought that it was just offsetting from a face. We use this all the time but it doesn't do angles. But, we couldn't do it to a point on the object. The selections for constraining only give faces and edges options. Me thinks you mean to make a point at that location?

As for the work surface solution (Did you mean a work Plane?) . I made the WP and that worked. But i have a couple of concerns. If you look at the atached picture (BTW, it would be nice to put the pictures in this text area. IF anyone can tell me how to do that .....) you'll see that the 45d angle works fine but the WP is sticking out from the object. We could align the WP wit hte end of the object but thats were my concerns come from. I have a feeling that constraining a WP and not constraining the object is a bad technique.

Your solution has helped fix this problem as far as this project goes but I think there must be a better way.

This can be done with 3 constraints without work points or planes:

1) Apply Angle constraint to any 2 faces.
2) Apply Mate constraint between 1st face on Part1 and 1st vertical edge on Part2. This will be a negative value.
3) Apply Mate constraint between 2nd face on Part1 and 2nd vertical edge on Part2. This will also be a negative value.

Take a look at the constraints in the attached assembly.

My 2 cents : I like Bunny's solution. It allows you to correct the angle and position if necessary without dealing with superfluous planes or axis (axises ? axes ? axiss ?)
The parts have sharp edges and nice large faces. Easy to constrain and control.

I am intrigued by your screenshot. If this is not proprietary, can I ask what it is? I am working on something similar, for a project in Canada.

The picture is just my attempt to reproduce a drawing by MC Escher called "Cubic space division". Check it out on wikipaintings.org. The painting is probably protected, but my 3D screenshot isn't. I'll post the IPT file if you want, but it's more fun to do it yourself. Besides, the file is 6.8 Mb. It's just a corner piece, arrayed several hundred times. Real hard on the graphics card
