    Default Starting a drawing correctly?

One of the things I haven't quite got the hang of yet is how to set up a new drawing, achieving the desired scale and getting it all squared away to work in model space while doing all the notes/dims in paper space.

I accepted a side-job to draft up a site plan for this gentleman's store. I started my drawing by simply opening up ADT and drawing. I want the model left in the model tab while I generate all my dims and notes on a separate layout with the viewport scale at 1" = 20'.
I guess I'm just not sure how to go about achieving this.
Any help with this problem will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks all.

I always draw at 1:1 in model space and then scale the viewports in paper space for plotting.

I do all text and dims (which relate specifically to the model components) in model space too, and set the text height so that it scales to a readable size when scaled in the viewport - eg for 1:50 my text is 75mm, and for 1:100 my text is 150mm.

With general non-specific text I place it paper space at normal 1:1 size

I suppose that you could use one of the std. templates that comes with ADT & use the drawing setup interface to achieve the desired settings for your drawing. It will configure all the stuff you mention that you want to set-up.

I would also do a quick search of the help system for ADT & see what you come up with.

Setting up a good template for drawing is half the battle of cad drawing. Using different templates for different drawing types is common I think. Like one for site plans one for floor plans etc. Starting off with an ADT standard template is good as it should help eliminate crashes and corruption related problems.

Like everything in AutoCAD, there are a 100 ways to do anything.

If you want to Dimension and Annotate in Paper Space, set your text height to the correct height and then in your Dimension Style Manager, Modify the Dim Style under the Fit Tab to "Scale Dimensions to Layout (Paperspace). That way the dimension will 'read' the scale factor of the view port and adjust accordingly. I think this is a good idea especially if you use the same model space for multiple Layout spaces with different scales.

This is also good if you only want to maintain one dimension style. Less maintenance = Good thing!

Thanks for all the good suggestions.
I think the guy was definately pleased with the site plan I did for him.
