Default Introduction - tell us about your facility

There are some folks who read this forum, even with it's low traffic, and I met some fascinating FM folks at Autodesk University last week, so I wanted to just start an introduction thread.

Don't mind the dates on these posts, if you stumble on this two years from now, go ahead and post your reply anyway, it'll be a good reflection on our industry.

Just tell us about your facility, and the type of work that you do, along with the software that you utilize.

(Note: this introductory thread is about us and the work that we want to do in-house, not about our potential as clients, I assure you these forums are an ad-free zone. Any complaints about violations in posts or private messages can be made to me, or any other forum moderators.
Also, feel free to check out the resources on the Facility Management Community pages, and recommend any additions you might think of.
Thank you for being a part of this group of unique professionals!)

    Sr. FM Systems Specialist

I was hired to administer Archibus in my facility. We're a financial services company with over 500 leased spaces and oversee about 6 million square feet of office space. My users oversee small renovations, work orders, leases, moves and maintenance contracts, etc.
I use vanilla AutoCAD to propose space layouts, as a part of my work projecting occupancy. Some of my users are in LT, taking measurements and making minor changes.

    CADD/BIM Coordinator

This is not my current job, but, I wanted to chime in on the role I filled for the first 13 1/2 years of my career in FM, as it seemed a bit more rare among those I spoke with.

I worked for a 100+ year old medical center, supporting the Engineering staff. Renovations were outsourced, but, systems upgrades and building trouble-shooting were done in-house by us.
When I left, I was using AutoCAD MEP and Revit MEP (as part of the Building Design Suite Premium). The Operations team was upgrading to IBM Maximo (in the future, looking to tie the BAS's and Archibus into that). The campus upgrade plan is going to be all BIM and sat down with cad/engineering/operations to get the data everyone needed included in the database (using both Revit and dRofus).
MEPFP information was received from renovation projects and put together in a patchwork quilt of the campus, separated out by discipline.
Approx 12% of the campus was available in Revit MEP, a further 20% availabe in AutoCAD MEP. This is a long transition, as was the 15 year transition from paper to CAD.
I trained dozens of users in DWG Trueview measuring and plotting, a handful in Design Review markups and another handful in AutoCAD LT. Also oversaw the supporting hardware, with half a dozen plotters and a couple of large-format copiers and four workstations with large monitors (eventually, I was planning to transition them to table computers like a Microsoft Surface, etc).
There were many life-safety issues, long-term planning/roi/budgeting issues and the focus was on fast access to vital data, to troubleshoot repairs to lessen the impact on the redundant systems supporting our patients, visitors and employees.

    Hi Melanie,
Good to see your efforts to get these forums going. =)

Im a VCD Engineer for a CM company. Our dept has been tasked to put together a presentation on FM. Softwares and guidelines. This is a good place to start. Hopefully i can get enough feedback and reading time to understand this a little more.

    Good day.

Hello! I am a jill of all trades at Boise State University. I keep all of our facilities management drawings up to date and do a whole slew of other things as well. I'm exploring the benefits of converting our 2D cad files to revit and bringing out University into the world of BIM. I feel a bit lonely in this endeavor. We also use Archibus for space management and our maintenance and operations team uses TMA. I'm wondering if implementing BIM will help bring us all together.

Hi! I'm Jessica. I am a CAD Technician at a large FM company. I am the only CAD person in our area of the country for our company. I'm not sure what the situation is with our other regions. I have been here for 3 years now, and I'm looking to hopefully get some training to bring our region into the 21st century in terms of BIM and FM collaboration. I came here today (haven't been here in quite a while!) looking for some opinions and information to hopefully get this ball rolling. I will post in other more appropriate topics what exactly I'm looking for! Thanks! Nice to find this area of the forum!

I'm Brendan, I'm the BIM Manager at Denver International Airport. The shortest description of my role is taking the buzzwords and lip service of BIM that are so common in the AEC sector and turn them into Facilities Management reality. It's been a fun ride so far (2+ years) and I'm excited about the road ahead!

I am currently working as a facility management executive. As facility management has become increasingly recognized to improve employee, customer, and client health and well-being, businesses can increase efficiency, productivity, and profitability.
    • Occupancy and Human factors
    • Operations and Maintenance
    • Sustainability
    • Communication
    • Facility information and technology management
These are some of the core activities that software performs for its users.
