Question - is there a way to get a total acreage or square footage of let say 100 parcels without having to select each one individually using the area command.

You can create report through the Toolbox tab of the Toolspace palette.
You can also Add a Table for Parcel Area showing the appropriate data from the Annotate ribbon.
