Default Can AutoCAD 2014 .dwg be saved as R14 .dwg?

Is it possible to save an AutoCAD 2014 Mechanical .dwg as an AutoCAD R14 .dwg? If so, what is the procedure?

    Type SAVEAS.
In the Save Drawing As dialog, the default 'files of type' selection is going to be 2013, just select R14/98/LT97 from that dropdown.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but if you're in AutoCAD Mechanical there may be an "Export to AutoCAD" command that "dumbs down" objects that AutoCAD R14 would not be able to read.
It's also possible that a save down that far back would kill the smart objects on its own.

I found this also, which suggests that saving down to R14 is not possible in AutoCAD Mechanical, but offers a workaround:
