XREF isn't loading properly

I'm having trouble loading an XREF, that normally works fine. When I try to load the .dwg I get a message saying: ** Error: "drawing name" is already a standard block in the current drawing. In fact, I can see the layers from my XREF in my Layer Properties Manager, but the prefix looks a bit funky. All layers have a $0$ prefix. I've never seen this before. I'm using Map 3D 2012. Any ideas on a solution? Thanks in advance.

The layers with the $0$ within the name mean the xref those used to belong to is now bound to the drawing. You will need to rename the original xref name within the drawing before you will be able to reference it again as an XREF.

Or purge your drawing if the bound xref has been exploded or deleted. You should then be able to xref it again.

I've tried both of these steps, however, the xref still doesn't appear. The status says loaded, but I don't understand why I can't view it. Is there a way to unbind the original xref? I don't need all these extra layers in my layer manager.
