Link family parameter formulas to project parameters

I have a plumbing fixture I created and I want certain parts of the family to show up when I have a domestic view, and other parts to show up when I have waste view.

I feel like I can create a parameter in my project and name it "Domestic" or "Waste" and have the family formula go look for that parameter to determine visibility, I'm thinking something like this:

Waste family elements visibility, If(View Parameter "XXX" = "Waste", Yes, No)

Is this possible?

That is not possible, the Parameter settings of an element cannot vary from View to View. What you are aiming to achieve here can be accomplished by use of Subcategories. In the Family Editor under Object Styles, you can create a "Domestic" and a "Waste" Subcategory, and then select the applicable elements and assign them to the appropriate Category (under the elements' Properties). Then you can specifically turn on/off either Subcategory in the appropriate Views.
