Question Dimensions change when adding wall layers

Hello, Sorry for the newbie question. I did a search and returned nothing helpful, maybe I was looking with the wrong key words?

The the core wall dimension on this drawing are changing when I ad finish or sheathing layers. I drew the walls as 5 1/2" studs w/ outer face of core option, no other layers. If I try to add 7/16" osb sheathing the walls move and dimensions change. I try adding the layers as substrate and finish (1)/(2) and it makes no diff.

The dimensions were created using face of core setting.

I am attaching the model in question.

What am I missing? Thanks Jim

    A couple of things:

    1. Adding the 7/16" OSB can occur either in the "core" or outside of it. Where you place it depends on how you build in your area (OSB flush with outside of foundation or 7/16" beyond it)

    2. Watch how you dimension (face of wall, core of wall) Where you place the OSB can make the dimensions move depending on how you dimensioned.

    3. Even in residential it is a good idea to use grid lines and align and lock your walls to the grid. Chris Zoog wrote a "Framing for newbies guide" and I think it is still posted here somewhere. Chris' guide covers a lot of this very well.

The walls are not moving the dimensions are following the face of wall. even if they are set at core of wall.. I added the wall sheathing to the outside of the core boundry.. I will check out the link you provided.. Thanks

Are you sure the dimensions were created with the "Faces of Core" setting? When I make a new dimension on your model it reacts correctly.

Yeah the new dim's react correctly. I am sure the existing dims were created w/ face of core.

Well I guess its just this model or the some setting I have in the template. I've tried recreating this situation in a new file starting with generic Revit template and the dimensions reacted as one would expect.

Is there a setting that would allow existing dimensions to change reference locations when adding wall layers, from "core of wall" to "face of wall"?

    Thanks for your help..

    Hey there,
You could try clicking on one of the offending dimension strings and then right click and then click 'select all instances'. Then select properties and modify the core/face parameter. This way, all dimensions with that "offending" setting could be changed once and they all would change.
    Good luck

Also check the 'Location Line' value under Constraints in the wall properties. It may be set to 'Core Face'. If you change the wall construction, the wall will expand based on that setting.

I really wish that would work, but the witness lines still stay put. I have been wishing to be able to change witness line locations from finish to core for all the dimensions on the drawing with one command ever since I started using Revit, but I have yet to figure out how to do it other than pulling them over one at a time.
