Can Data Links Update Automatically?

Is there a way to make data links update automatically (like xrefs do) when a dwg file is opened? For example, if I make a change in the linked excel file, when I open the dwg file containing a table linked to it, I still have to manually update the data link. Not a big problem until you try to batch plot.

DXEVAL when set to 32 updates the table when you do a save - this works with ACAD drawings linked, haven't tried with excel files though. Does not work with ACAD 2007 (DXEVAL did not exist then), but works with 2013, not sure of anything in between.
