    Default Template File Naming Convention

I am curious to see how other firms name there template files.

Currently the way that I have them set up is they start with an abbreviation of the company name followed by a specific name. At times we do work for state agencies and such and they have there own specific requirements for standards so I have template files to set up the same way but they start with the agency type, such as NJSS for New Jersey State Standards and then follow suit with the template name.

For example if I was creating profiles, I would select my XXXXX-Profiles.dwt file. If I was doing survey work I would select the XXXXX-Survey.dwt file.

My thought process has been that using the abbreviated company or agency description makes it easy to identify the appropriate template file quickly and easily.

Is this a good practice? Is there a better way? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Similar approach here -- although we add an underscore to the start of the company/client name, include a v1 etc for version, and don't segregate drawing types.

Underscore ensures that the custom templates sort at the top of the list instead of having to scroll down past all the acad* names to get to the ones we ususally need.

You can also place your custom templates in a separate folder(s) or subfolder(s). In fact I've got my default template location set to my own folder so I don't have to wade through AutoCAD's plethora of templates.

We used to dump everything into a monolithic drawing template, but since Civil 3D, I've moved to a broken out approach as you do.

Originally as a means by which to prevent unnecessary layer & styles bloat of drawing files, with the added benefit of easier to navigate layers, etc.... But that was prior to the IMPORTSTYLESANDSETTINGS functionality.

With the advent of the latter, I now have a 'light' default DWT, and quickly bring in what I need, when I need it, but the other users here are not as proficient with C3D coming from Land Desktop 2004 (small jump; LoL), so I'm about to break everything out again and integrate into a new project creator application, which handles the project folders, file naming, etc... Project drawings are using NCS naming conventions, but templates are more developer/namespace style given my developer hobby (it's more readable, and succinct compared to sentence style).

    Cheers
