or send them a dwf or pdf.
screwing around with locks and passwords inside a dwg is a mess waiting to happen. There are just far too many ways for that to end badly, and in court.

Agree!
Sit down with your client, partner, etc., and negotiate these things (types of data to share, versions, etc.) up front and then there are no questions later on.
