Is it possible to import a photoshop psd file into autocad as an image.
I've tried several times, but the program crashes with a fatal error.
Is there a workaround other than saving the image as a pdf or jpeg or tif.
thanks.

You should be able to use IMAGEATTACH to do this. Once attached it will be treated as an XREF.
If you are getting a fatal error using this process. I would check the DWG you're using as the host file. Make sure it is error free. Then check the PSD file. If you create a simple PSD, and are able to attach it using the IMAGEATTACH command, the original one may have too many layers, be too large, have errors, etc.. preventing it from attaching correctly.
Best bet is probably to export the PSD to a .PNG format. Frankly it seems pointless to maintain an editable file version within the dwg, and PSDs are in a proprietary format.
In preferences, try the file handling tab to ensure that maximise PSD file compatibility is on. If you have multiple layers, PNG or JPG would be a better option.
