Best Practices - Phasing in AutoCAD (in a less than perfect world)
Hello - I thought I might get some suggestions on how everyone is handling phases in AutoCAD projects beyond simple layer controls. Is there any way (or add-on software) to set up phasing like we have in Revit? We use Revit for some building projects, but have many complicated civil projects that are drawn in Civil 3D or even straight AutoCAD. We are of course using the standard layering procedures to set up "Demo", "Existing" and "Proposed" entities in a dwg, as well as xrefs (say, for the existing) but that is limited when we have many iterations on one site. For instance, we may have an existing site plan and building and need to show an addition and some demo building and site work. Easy enough to begin by setting up the proper layers and xrefs needed, and that would be all well and good in a perfect world where later this new addition would become part of the "Existing" as we possibly went on to other additions. However, usually this addition goes through several iterations that the client wants to see. Then later it may or may not actually be built, or maybe just part of it. So the items we turned into "Demo" now need to be put back on "Existing" . . . but, wait a minute - now the client wants to go back to the first version! And we can't really have separate dwgs. for this because some things will need to be done in all of the dwgs. This has become very difficult to manage inside one drawing. In Revit I could use links and phasing for this - any suggestions for the AutoCAD world?
