Help Rotating a revolve in a family

I am trying to rotate a simple revolve in a family and have had no luck connecting the object to a reference line. I have created the revolve in a separate family, added reference lines then nested it into my primary family. After bringing it in I am not able to rotate it. I have set up a reference line that rotates correctly (fixed to two reference planes), however, I can not get the nested revolve family to attach and rotate. I am creating a pendent light fixture that has a canopy at the ceiling. I need to be able to rotate the canopy according to the slope of the ceiling.

Make the family 'work plane-based' and assign it to its own work plane in the project/family rather than the ceiling surface.

Annoyingly, in Revit, you can only rotate objects on the surface they are applied to (like the hands of a clock on their clock face). You cannot rotate them away from the surface (like a trap door in a floor) so if you assign them to its own reference plane then rotate the plane instead, the object will rotate with it.

Silly I know, but required.
