    Default Importing Lidar Data

    Afternoon all

I was after some Civils 3D help with importing lidar data please. I have asked our GIS team for the lidar data over a fairly large area but attached a small section of it in the form of a notepad document. The columns read eastings, northings and z values. I have tried to import the data into Civil 3D but none of the points seem to import to the correct location, can anyone help me sorry?

    Many thanks!

Every single northing is the same value.
It can't build a surface with that data.

Apologies, I should have picked up on that when selecting the data. How about the attached which has two different Y value pieces of information? I've tried it again but still can't get it to work. It seems to label the first point as 1.81 when I bring it into my drawing but I am not sure where it is getting that information from.

    Any advise welcome!

    Many thanks!

    Hi
You got a couple problems going on here. 1st there is no point numbers in the list, second you have commas and tab spaces have to use one or the other, you can't have both

Line 43 in your second txt file has an elevation of 5.94... Converting that to metric and you will get 1.81...

Which coordinate system is your lidar data supposed to represent? Verify you are assigning the appropriate system to your point cloud import. Also, verify your drawing coordinates are assigned correctly as well.
If you have a technical question, please find the appropriate forum and ask it there.

You don't need point numbers and the tabs get ignored. IOW, you can import this okay as a comma delimited file.

    No, still didn't work.
But --- I modified the northings in that file with some random data and it worked okay.

Many thanks for your replies, I still seem to be struggling annoyingly however. So I've got the attached txt file (attempt2) which has 10 points that I am using as a trial rather than thousands of pieces of data. I appreciate that the data all has the same Y value for the time being but when I import it into Civils 3D it seems to convert the data to Imperial so it uses the first point as 7.53 rather than 24.715. I am a tad confused regarding the whole importing at the moment now. I've attached a word document with some screen shots but I'm not sure where I am going wrong sorry.

The attached data is in metres but can anyone help me import it correctly please?

    Many thanks

    Afternoon all,

I think I have made some progress thankfully. It seems that when I was importing the lidar data, I should have changed my survey database settings for the distance from feet to metres.

I have attached a new lidar data set if you wouldn't mind looking at sorry please. So I have 8 points from as an example data set but I notice that when I try to import it, Civils 3D wants the northings first and then the eastings, does anyone else have this? In which case I have changed the readings so it reads point number, y value, x value, z value.

Am I right in thinking then that all of the attached is in metres which is what I want when I import the data? Although I believe that my first point for the z value is actually 6.15. I seem a bit confused still.

    Any help would be welcome

From your blurry screen shots, it appears you are using the PENZD file format for your lidar data while your point file data is in PENZ format. Notice there is no description provided for each point.

Your drawing settings do not have an assigned coordinate system. You should set one beforehand.

After mentioning all of that, it actually appears you are attempting to import this point data in as Survey Data. You will probably have better luck creating a point cloud directly through Tool Space. I believe Survey Data point files typically do not allow for the assignment of coordinate systems. I could be wrong as I do not import survey data often.

Ah right, thank you for pointing that out, annoyingly this is the first time I am trying this so unfortunately there are no doubt lots of first timer questions. I have had a three day training course but that was some 2 months ago and now I finally have the software to use at work I feel as if I have forgotten everything!

In order to set an assigned coordinate system I need to go into the settings tab on toolspace, right click on the drawing name and edit drawing settings, is that correct?

What I was trying to do was import the text file as a grid layout which is on a 2m by 2m grid I believe with a ‘x’ and a point number at each lidar point so I could then stitch the points together to create a ground profile. At each ‘x’ it would be the correct eastings, northings and z value as per the text file. Am I going about this the right way or am I making a right mess somewhere? My final goal is to create a long section with a proposed water main running through the area but I first need to import the data to create an existing ground profile.

Are there any step by steps guide or can anyone point me in the right direction please?

    Thanks all!
