    Default line direction

What setting or sysvar would cause a line to be drawn in the opposite direction? i.e. when I type the command line, @100<N90°E (due East) it draws the line due west.

units or set for surveyors units. direction: east is 0: usc is world. ucs icon has the y straight up and x is to the right.

Have you ran an annotation label on the line you draw to see what it says? Since you're attempting to draw N90°E, but getting the opposite direction I'm curious if the direction is still stated as being N90°E because that would probably mean that your DWG is borked. And on that note have you tried in other DWGs or have other users tried in the DWG? I can't think of why there'd be an opposite system variable, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be there.

Unfortunately i don't have the drawing in house. it's a friend of mine who's taking some drafting classes and she has the drawing on her laptop.
her assignment was to draw a survey parcel using bearings and distances (vanilla autocad, not C3D). I haven't seen it first hand, just going by what she is telling me.

yeah, my first thought is that W and E are next to each other on the keyboard,, and there's simply a typo happening. my personal bane is the I and O being so close together

The line is drawn relative to the coordinate system. Make sure the USC is set to World Coordinate System. At the command line, type,

    ucs enter enter
    plan enter enter

    Then draw the line.
