3d polylines to lwpolylines

When importing dxf 3d polylines in vanilla acad is there a way to convert them to 2d lwpolyines on the fly? I've heard there is a system variable setting to do just that.

Not 3DPolys, not that I'm aware of.

I think you are referring to PLINETYPE. When this is set to 2, 'heavy' polylines in R14 and earlier drawings are converted to LWPolylines upon opening the drawing.

There is nothing in core AutoCAD to auto-convert 3DPolylines to 2D

PLINETYPE is not version specific. It has worked the same in all versions since it's introduction (R14)
