    Default detect version

Summary: Avoid opening a Revit file with the wrong version.

Description: I would like to be able to detect the version of Revit file I've been given, either by hovering over the file name or right clicking to access properties. It would save so much time because you don't know you're using the wrong version until the file is completely loaded.

On the same line, if you have multiple versions installed it would be nice if it opened in the correct version.
Example: Project saved in 2015 and Revit 2014, 2015, and 2016 are installed, then it would open in 2015

Or if not installed then older projects would open in the oldest version installed.
Example: 2011 project and Revit 2014, 2015, and 2016 are installed, then it would open in 2014.

This presumes double-clicking a file to open it?

I don't see how using Open within a session of Revit is going to open a different version. I can't think of any other software that does that.

The most recent release gives us a chance to cancel opening a file that requires an upgrade.

In the meantime, naming conventions for projects can alleviate this by including the version in the name, like this: 1234-BigProject-A16.rvt where A is the discipline and 16 is the version. Alternatively a simple txt file named like this (_Revit Version is 2016.txt) can inform a team about the project version. The underscore places it at the top of a list in the folder.

The intent here is when you get a revit file from someone else, IE architect. The techs that are setting up the project are not always in the loops as to what version this project is in.

It's not native to Revit, but there's a plug-in called CTC BIM Project Suite 2019 available on the Autodesk app store that adds a right-click context item to Windows Explorer called Revit Properties.

This thread is 3 years old now. Revit now displays the version in the File Open dialog, in the preview window.
