Best solution is to start using MTEXT which has Background Mask as a property.
Attached lisp toggles Background Mask On/Off and will convert TEXT to MTEXT as needed.

thanks Tom. I thought engaging the object grouping in the selection tab of the options. seems to work on my machine, but others in the office area still having the issue after the change.
i do use mtext all the time, but others are still using dtext and like to use the express tools to mask.

It appears either the view is TWisted or a different coordinate system was used for the wipeout. While that's fixable a wipeout will never automatically adjust with text size or alignment modifications like MTEXT Background Mask.

Historically there's been issues with some plotters and 3rd party DWG to PDF drivers that output wipeouts as solid black. It's been a long time since I've used wipeouts myself.

no, just the text i wanted masked is rotated so it would overlap the other.

While I joke a lot about how there are a thousand ways to skin a cat ultimately some are inferior to others. Sometimes one workflow gives you something you want that another doesn't so it's grey there on what the best practice is going to be. If someone is choosing the use a a workflow just because it's what they know then that's fine until it creates issues avoidable by another (honestly even easier) workflow then the answer should be start doing that workflow. At a certain point it just becomes a matter of being right or wrong.

I will say that based on your images the wipeout text needs to be sent to the back (and/or the text to the front) and if that's not working then read the above again.
