    Default Visual styles

I have a surface, i have the screen split into two viewports.
surface is contours and triangle which display the same in both viewports. the visual style in both is set to 2d wireframe.
when i change on viewport to shaded so i can see where the problem areas are, my surface disappears.
what can i do to fix this? i have done this same procedure in c3d2016 without any problems. i have watched several youtube videos on this method.

now ii have another problem. when i select the surface and go to object viewer, it won't let me orbit using the shift+mouse wheel. it just moves the surface left or right or up and down.
