Default Civ 3D label issues via Xref

What can I do to get the Civil 3D labels to display properly when I attach the file as an X Ref?

The issue is the same I an having with Surface Contours becoming completely solid when attaching Civil 3D file to another too. The X Ref is taking on the layer value (Linetype=continuous) its put on.

do the labeling in the sheets, not the base file

dataref your surfaces into the sheets, not the base file

DRefs are your friend, and controlling labels means labeling only what's needed, where it's needed.
