BOM Creattion using spreadsheet.

Hello Guys, i am working on a contrat where the customer currently has an excel spreadsheet with their BOM on it. Currently they go through the spreadsheet and populate the boxes with their requirements. The items are always a specific number and they want to maintain this way of having the current BOM item numbers.

They have only just decided to goto inventor from Visio so i am setting their drawings and system up.

Have any of you guys had a similar situation or created a script that looks at the spreadsheet and assigns the BOM number to the particular part or assembly and then outputs a new BOM in excel for the current project ?

Can you explain a bit more what to do with the excel file after reading the data ?
What is the extension format of your Excel file? csv, xls or xlsx ?
