Default Unloading XREF with Surface greatly increases save time

I have an issue I've discovered in C3D 2020, which does not occur in C3D 2019. I have a XREF of a Surface loaded in to a drawing. When I save the drawing with the XREF loaded, the save time is what you'd expect at less than a second. When I unload the XREF'd Surface (and this happens for any surface - the XREF's are not corrupt and have been purged/audited), the drawing save time takes at least 5 seconds and C3D hangs while saving.

Can anyone duplicate this issue? All our users are experiencing it in our office.

    My steps:

    • Civil 3D 2020
    • Open a new drawing using the stock template (_Autodesk Civil 3D (Imperial) NCS.dwt)
    • Save it (took about 1.5 seconds)
    • Xattach in a sample surface drawing ("C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2020\C3D\Help\Civil Tutorials\Drawings\Surface-8.dwg" ), using Overlay.
    • Save parent drawing again, 1.5 seconds.
    • Unloaded Xref
    • Save parent drawing again, 1.5 seconds.

    I don't see any difference.

Thanks for the reply! I just used your method, except I substituted the tutorial surface for my surface. When I XREF'd, I got an error regarding missing SHX files, to load or ignore. When I loaded the SHX file I didn't have the save time issue anymore. We definitely have the SHX file loaded in our templates though, so I don't know why C3D 2020 is searching through my Support File Paths for SHX files when an XREF is unloaded... that's still curious.

This is a bug in 2020. I had the same issue when testing 2020 for a company wide upgrade. My reseller took this to Autodesk and it was promoted to the development team. Autodesk acknowledged that it is their issue to fix. Hopefully it will be fixed in an upcoming update. They would not provide an ETA. Because of this we will be upgrading to 2019 instead of 2020.

I was not provided with many specifics except that unloaded xrefs are being loaded and then unloaded again during a save.

Thank you for this response! I had been in touch with Autodesk and they threw their hands up at the issue originally. I really thought it had to do with missing .shx files or some configuration, but since I'm able to reproduce the problem out of the box, I hope I can persuade them that it's not an issue with my configuration. I am following up with them again in hopes that they will acknowledge the issue is on their end with me as well!

In case anyone else comes across this issue. Rolling back Civil 3D 2020.2 Update resolved the issue for our team, as advised by Autodesk here: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/civil...s/td-p/9247721.

    Thanks for all your help!

I can confirm the removing the C3D 2020.2 update did alleviate the slow save issue.

I got hold of a copy of the 2020.1 update. I installed it and the slow save issue returned. I removed 2020.1 and am currently installing 2020 with no updates on all our computers.

2020.3 Came out today. They did not address the slow save time in this release.

I supposed the code changes for the .3 update were frozen when this was discovered.
