    Default Surface Points

    It looks like a safe assumption but am still interested in hearing what the technical difference is in the point types of a surface in image

    Not sure what you are asking.

    Civil 3D has COGO points.
    Civil 3D Surfaces have data points.
    The are not related, unless you create a surface that includes COGO points as source data.

    Look at the Points Tab (below) in the surface style and check out THIS link.
