Default Remove grading while keeping created surface

Is there a way to keep the surface that was created with a grading and remove the grading object? The surface deletes when I delete the grading that created the surface. I don't want the feature lines that are created with the grading object.
    Thanks,
    TT

export to XML, delete original surface, import surface back from XML

But, why on earth get rid of the elements that define the surface? Be a real PITA to edit/change/tweak. To use the surface in a drawing, just DRef it in. The only thing that should exist in the surface drawing is the surface and the entities that define it.

there is a "create detached surface" command. select one of the grading objects and it should be on the contextual ribbon.
