    Default Civil 3d Point Groups

I'm trying to find out how someone gets points into a group without actually assigning them. (This is a topo group not the _All Points group)

    Typically I will include points With numbers matching on the Include tab, and exclude any with bad elevations;

but a drawing that I get from a contractor has the points but there is no way

to determine how they were added or captured. There is nothing selected on the include tab and there is nothing selected on the Query Builder to include said points.

I would appreciate any help on this

    Thanks

Without seeing the data; I can only make a broad assumption.

The point groups MAY have been created in one of two ways.

    1) from a survey import event; each import event creates a unique point group from that event.

    2) from an import points event, a typical 'best practice' is to create a unique point group for each point import event so
that it easy to know (group) points from those events together. This is done for reason like, if the points
need a datum adjustment then that group can be adjusted, or a rotation, etc. By grouping each import event it makes it easier to
do these types of global adjustments to a single group.

Again without seeing the data these are the most likely ways those groups were created.
OR it could have happened from a 'query' operation, or by setting the group to automatically group by description filter(s)

And lastly it might have been a function of some other survey post processing application like Trimble or others.

We import all points from separate text files that come from Trimble Access codes. ( this does cause issues with Civil 3d but that's beyond the scope of this issue)

We then give the consultant the drawing file to draft, so there should be no separate importing necessary.
It is up to the Drafter/Technician to select the valid points to be entered into the Topo group to be defined under the surface.
I will use a point range that can clearly be followed by others, in the case of the consultant there is no apparent way to track what they did.

    Thanks
    Brian

Do you typically have the same Trimble Access Codes for each surface? You can create a point group that includes points matching raw descriptions. This point group can be added to a surface. When new points are added to the drawing, the surface can be rebuilt after the associated point group is updated.
If you have a technical question, please find the appropriate forum and ask it there.
You will get a quicker response from your fellow AUGI members than if you sent it to me via a PM or email.

Not sure why you can't track the points look in the surface definition for the point group unless they Landxml the surface out to you its there
