    Default PDF to AutoCAD

    Esteemed fellow AUGI members....

I am using AutoCAD 2022. It's been a while since I have had to use AutoCAD. I am creating Architectural backgrounds, relying on Construction Document PDF's. I can easily import a PDF and trace over it. However, I am finding many videos on YouTube where apparently AutoCAD can convert the PDF to AutoCAD layers automatically. This would be a huge time-saver. However, when I follow the steps that I am watching on youtube, the best I get is a raster image of the PDF. I never get the PDF to actually convert to AutoCAD. Is that possible, or what am I doing wrong?

You aren't doing anything wrong. PDF's are like zip files. When you import them, you get what is stored inside them. In this case, the dwg was converted to a raster image when plotted to pdf. You can choose what options to use when you plot to pdf. Either the consultant didn't realize that they had is set to raster, or they are doing it intentionally to protect their work.

the PDF has to be saves out of PDF software such as Acrobat with layering turned on. it will not convert scanned PDF or PDF's that have not been saved correctly.

whether layering is enable in the PDF or not doesn't matter. What does matter is whether the PDF has vector information, or image information. Vector can be imported, image has to be traced.

Of course, the precision in a PDF is much lower than a DWG file work with, so importing can get ugly....
