No matter which way I link the Datalink, its not inserting.

Any suggestions about what I am doing wrong?

Once you've added a data link, try the TABLE Command, Insert options, From a data link radio button & dropdown.

Have you tried copy / pasting and paste special? then paste link. We insert excel spreadsheets as linked OLE all the time. Copy in excel, then under the Edit menu, Paste Special. You have the option to Paste or Paste Link. Select the paste link radio button. Then choose either Microsoft Excel, or AutoCAD Entities. the entities paste it as a table, the Microsoft pastes it as a linked OLE.

I do the method you mention sometimes.

When the X-cel file is is changing I want to have them dynamically linked though.
