    Default Layer Settings in X-refs

New company Civ3d Setup workspace settings

Is the attached image how layer settings should be to distribute layer changes through/to X-Refs except on/off & freeze/thaw?

I have worked for years now under the impression that this has superseded the visretain variable.

I don't want on/off freeze/thaw to be changed in the sheet drawing when I change them in the base X-Refs.

Have you tested this by creating sample xref drawings and adjusting different layer settings in the reference drawings? Reloading any changes should show you what is happening.
If you have a technical question, please find the appropriate forum and ask it there.

Have tried testing multiple ways with no success.

If I have a Sheet.dwg that has Basefile.dwg attached to it, What should visretain and xrefoverride be set to in each DWG?

I would be frustrated by this too.

Perhaps it would be prudent to take a step back, disabled XREF overrides, leverage VISRETAIN=1 (with a named Layer State) to see where it may not do what you need, and only then test & introduce aspects of XREF overrides.

    I think that is it. xrefoverride=0, visretain=1
