Default Lock up while selecting in Copy with Basepoint command

I click on Copy with Basepoint, select the basepoint, then try to select the objects (enclosure or crossing window, doesn't seem to matter) to be copied and the darn thing locks up.
There is a little tiny blue filled box near the cursor after lockup. I don't know what that is. Never seen it before.
    Any ideas out there?

What type of elements or objects are you copying? Can you wblock these items to a new drawing?

Just general line work. Since I first posted this, I am still seeing the tiny blue filled box next to the cursor, which may or may not have anything to do with the lockup issue.
One responder said to select the items to be copied first, then click copy with basepoint. This method helps.
I rebooted the program and today I am not getting lockup but that little box is still there.
