viewport zoom issue

the issue is the viewport will, on it's on, zoom out to infinity. when I zoom back in it's jumpy and wants to zoom out again.
I have to hit the scale I want and immediately freeze the viewport to capture it. anybody have any ideas? this has happened in
several different dwgs on different machines.

It's probably not going to infinity, but ZOOM EXTENTS. I always lock my viewport so it doesn't do this and so I can pan and zoom with my mouse while in modelspace. You might also check this tip out.
