Default Specific characters from lookupstring via DIESEL

I have a dynamic block where the attribute text is a field that changes based on a lookup selection. Issue is I would like the lookup selections to not be abbreviations, rather have the attribute text shortened to the first character and the 12th character from the end of the string, which will always be 12.

Is this possible to do via DIESEL, after a few days of googling and finding no answer it appears not? I don't *have* to have it this way as for now I just set the lookups as the abbreviations, but it would be nice to show the user the full text to avoid potential confusion.

Can you post your block dwg so we can see what you're trying to do?

I attached both versions, you'll see the abbreviated one which shows "AE" as how I would like the attribute to display, however for the text in the lookup to read as in the block on the right.
