Publishing DXF's in Autocad 2006

Hi, I've been using the publishing tool to create reference documents on our current system and its working really well. Unfortunately im also wanting to use it to document alot of the dxf files that on the system as well. The options in the publish box allows me to select dxf files but the dialog always come up with an error saying that the dxf hasn't got a layout initialised and comes up with an error if it is published. Is there any easy way to get it to publish a dxf file without having to save it as a dwg file and initialise a layout ?

hmm, I'm not sure how to get around that myself...
trying to do a google to see if I could dredge up any useful discussions... perhaps a 3rd party product could help?
