xref drawings not updating

Hi,
I have recently switched jobs and was using cad 2005 and now going backwards and using cad map 2002. A problem I'm having. When I change a layer to a different color or linetype in the original drawing, it will NOT change it in the drawing that I have it xrefed into. So, I end of having to change it twice! I know there has to be some way to make this work! the drawing itself updates if anything is changed of coarse, but not the linetypes or colors, etc. If someone out there in augi world could help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm sure it is some kind of variable setting, right? Thanks so much.
