assigning layer key to new all style?

I haven't done this for a long time and am trying to remember how to assign a "demo" wall style I created to an "AD" layer.
I created the wall style and, in the tool palette, I right click, select properties, and assign a layer key, but when I draw it, it's still on the a-wall layer.
