Export Flood Trace to shapefile

I've completed a flood trace, and can see it on screen, but i can't figure out how to export it to a shapefile. Any suggestions?

Did you try MAP>>Tools>>Export and select shape file?

yes i tried that, and got an error message saying there was no entity to export. I can see the original network's trace on screen, so it's making me crazy. It seems that the trace selection is in memory, but not becoming it's own lines. I even was able to put it on its own layer, then in the export, specify that layer, and that's when i get the "no entity" error.
