Hi
To follow on from Forum Tips & Tricks thread "Elegant Linking to Other Threads" by Steve Stafford...
First a little background info.
With the below examples replace "<" & ">" with "[" & "]" respectively.
Link to a thread:
<url=FullAddressPathHere>ThreadNameHere OR TextOfYourChoiceHere</url>
<url=http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=25402>Elegant Linking to Other Threads</url>
OR
We can use the "thread" tag -
<thread=25402>Elegant Linking to Other Threads</thread>
And how both look after we replace - Elegant Linking to Other Threads
Link to a forum:
<url=http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=46>Forum Tips & Tricks</url>
And how it looks after we replace - Forum Tips & Tricks
Link to a specific post within a thread:
Using thread "Breaking info on AutoCAD 2006" as an example, we will link directly to the third post I have made within that thread.
AUGI Forums > General Design > AutoCAD > AutoCAD Support > AutoCAD 2006 > AutoCAD 2006 General > Breaking info on AutoCAD 2006
The secret here is to obtain the unique Post ID number, there are a few different ways to get at this information, below I present the method I personally find to be the simplest and most straight forward (though I would happily welcome any information that demonstrates an easier method).
Browse / Go to / Search / etc. to the page containing the post you want to link to ie.
http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=15716
Right click on any of the three icons found in the bottom right corner of the post you want to link to ie.
Edit button (is only visible if you are the author of the post)
Quote button
Quick Reply button
Refer to attached screen capture for further info.
Firefox (my browser of choice) - From the right-click menu select "Copy Link Location" ie.
IE - From the right-click menu select "Copy Shortcut" ie.
Edit button - http://forums.augi.com/editpost.php?...tpost&p=150089
Quote button - http://forums.augi.com/newreply.php?...reply&p=150089
Quick Reply button - http://forums.augi.com/newreply.php?...reply&p=150089
All of the above give the required Post ID number.
Make a note of the number (only) or copy (Ctrl+C) ie. 150089
All! URL's to posts follow the below format -
http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?p=<PostNumberHere>#post<PostNumberHere>
Therefore the link to the actual post we want to link to would look like -
http://forums.augi.com/showthread.ph...089#post150089
<url=http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?p=150089#post150089>Third post in thread "Breaking info on AutoCAD 2006"</url>
OR
We can use the "post" tag -
<post=150089>Third post in thread "Breaking info on AutoCAD 2006"</post>
And how both look after we replace - Third post in thread "Breaking info on AutoCAD 2006"
For more information of tags that can be used in posts, please refer to the following couple of links...
Are there any special codes/tags I can use to markup my posts?
vB Code List
I hope the above helps, and I have managed to explain in a clear and easy to follow manner.
